As I was walking in the sunlight, the wonderful quote by John Milton came into my mind:
It really is true. Heaven and hell are not external places where we go because of misdeeds or acts of virtue. They are quite simply, states of mind which are strengthened and weakened by the things we think, say and do.
When we allow destructive emotions such as anger and hatred to take over our minds, right there, we are in hell. Everyone we see becomes an enemy, even loved ones. Small things which would have gone unnoticed before become sources of intense frustration and rage. Life becomes a battle which cannot be won.
These hellish states of mind can last any length of time. From a few moments to countless eons. So powerful is the mind that it can create an entire universe in which to experience itself.
Now, when we are caught in these destructive cycles, it is very easy to blame external conditions. The last thing we want to do is consider that it is all, ultimately coming from us, but that it what is required.
There is a wonderful video which demonstrates this in a very beautiful way:
God has created us in his image. We literally hold the power to create anything we wish with our boundless minds. So loving is he that he will never stop us from doing this, no matter what horrors we create for ourselves. For we have been granted total freedom. This is not to say that he doesn’t care, for it is the pure energy of love. Out of boundless love for its own creation, he speaks to everyone, and many messengers of God’s love have come and gone throughout the ages. But we have the freedom to ignore them if we wish and many have.
But just like a loving parent, he will never stop helping us to realise our own divinity. And just as a parents love for their children is completely unconditional, so is his love for us.
There is a wonderful buddhist story which demonstrates the power of love:
It is the destiny of every single being in the whole of creation to realise complete unity with God. It is simply a truth waiting to be accepted.
May all beings be at well, happy and peaceful,
May they come to no harm,
May they always meet with spiritual success,
May they always have patience, courage, understanding and determination to meet and overcome inevitable difficulties, problems and failures in life.
May they rise above them with morality, integrity, compassion, forgiveness, mindfulness and wisdom.
